A series of explosions at a weapons depot in the central Syrian city of Homs left dozens of people dead on Thursday, hours after President Bashar al-Assad made a rare public appearance to insist that his army was close to victory.

Rockets were fired into the loyalist Wadi al-Zahab neighbourhood of Homs, triggering several explosions at the depot and sending a fireball hundreds of feet into the sky.
At least 40 people were reported to have been killed in the blasts, with the death toll expected to rise as dozens were also left critically injured.
The area of the battleground city is majority Alawite, the same sect as Mr Assad, and the weapons depot was reportedly operated by pro-regime militias.
