Losing Democratic party candidate in the last presidential election, Hillary Clinton, has just launched a new political action group. She sent a blast email Monday afternoon asking supporters to sign up for the new group which she calls Onward Together.
Mrs Clinton described the group as “an organization dedicated to advancing the progressive vision that earned nearly 66 million votes in the last election.” “Onward Together will work to build a brighter future for generations to come by supporting groups that encourage people to organize and run for office.” she concluded.
From first analyses, it looks like Mrs Clinton recognizes that the major reason she lost the last election was her unwillingness to run a more progressive race, and is ostensibly trying to correct that this time by playing to the progressive wing of the party. That’s why she made it a point to name progressive sounding, but obscure groups like Swing Left, Emerge America, Color of Change, Indivisible, and Run for Something as partners of Onward Together.
The question, though, is whether anybody but her core supporters would believe this apparent play to the left wing of the party. One of the major major reasons she lost the presidential election was because she couldn’t convince Bernie Sanders’ supporters to vote for her, even though she ended up almost taking over Senator Sanders platform, by claiming to support everything he campaigned on.
The trust is just not there for Mrs Clinton, because she has a very visible and long record of saying things she doesn’t mean in order to gain political advantage. In fact, a CNN poll in July 2016, just before the election saw 68% of respondents say that she is dishonest and untrustworthy. You may say that was in the heat of a bitter campaign, but the best she has ever done on that front is about 59%.
Another sure deduction that can be made from this latest move is that she is definitely gearing up to give the presidency another crack come 2020. Why else would she form another political action group? There is your answer, if you’re one of those who have been wondering what her next move will be.
The last, but what I consider the most important deduction one could make from this move is that Mrs Clinton herself is also a bearer of the tone deaf attitude of her supporters when it comes to why she lost, and whether she stands a chance of ever winning the presidency despite her horrible records and what she represents.
You hear the tone deaf excuses everyday, from everywhere, and every possible mouthpiece – be they the Mainstream media, liberal commentators, liberal comic shows, or party leaders – that Hillary Clinton only lost the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump because of Russia, Russian trolls paid to deceive American voters on the internet, or decades of “Republican lies” about Hillary Clinton.
What version you hear usually depends on who is speaking, the audience they’re speaking to, and the situation or condition at the time of the speech, but it’s definitely one of those talking points every single time. It’s almost like they have thought about it and decided on their story, and will stick with it, even though they know it’s wrong, and that they sound ridiculous.
They know exactly why Hillary lost, but either seem willing to bet 2020 on the belief that what happened did not actually happen, or that it was a mistake which could be corrected with a little more lie, deceit and cover ups. It’s that, or they believe that Trump will be so beat up by their propaganda war against him during his four years, and made to look so bad, that Americans will want nothing to do with him after his first term, if he manages to finish it.
The fact, however, is that they made that exact same bet about beating a decidedly horrible candidate Trump in 2016, and lost, so you would wonder why they’ll be willing to risk that move again in 2020. There is no answer that makes much sense to that, except that they’re completely tone deaf, and blind to reality. That, and the disdain they have for the intelligence of their party faithful who they still believe are not smart enough to make the kind of decision they made in 2016 about not voting for her despite how terrible Trump was supposed to be.
They’re betting this time that the concerted efforts to make Trump look bad at governing over his four years in the White House will tarnish the president so much that even those Democrats who rejected her would happily vote for her in 2020.
Only time will tell how well this strategy will work on this second iteration, but the fact they don’t seem to get is that people already had that choice the first time and chose Trump.
