Russian-Hungarian energy partnership – Trojan horse for Europe?

The relations between Hungary and Europe cannot be characterized as friendly for the recent years.

The latest evidence of that was the appeal of Hungarian parliament addressed to the State Duma of Russia to combine forces “to protect national minorities in Ukraine”. However during the 12th UN Forum on “Education, language and the rights of minorities” Hungary could not represent objective evidence of impairment of rights of Hungarian community in the territory of Ukraine.

Such demarche of Hungary towards Ukraine may only be considered as non-amicable. And this is against the background that Russia has already annexed Crimea and is supporting separatist formations in East of Ukraine.

Over and above, there is really telling. That is about the scandalous statement of Hungarian ambassador Istvan Íjgyártó on necessity to create an autonomy in Transcarpathia that was made the next day after threatening speech of Russian State Duma chairman Volodin, who told that “some regions may leave Ukraine”. Maybe “some regions” meant Transcarpathian region of Ukraine, mentioned by Hungarian ambassador. Such co-ordination of statements of Russian and Hungarian officials preceded such significant events as NATO summit in London and Normand format meetings. It barely could be coincidence. The actions undertaken by Russia and Hungary have all signs of mutual and well-planned information attack against Ukraine.

But what are the reasons that make Hungary to follow lead of Russia, supporting anti-Ukrainian policy?

Allegedly it is a recent visit of the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Gazprom, Viktor Zubkov in Budapest and his meeting with Péter Szijjártó. It is well known that Gazprom, as gaz monopolist, is an effective instrument of gaz blackmail of Europe. Such connection of economic and political reasons has already caused aggression against Ukraine and occupation of its territories.

Hungary has supported the aggressor, making split in the unity of EU on the matter of sanctions. This is proved by Péter Szijjártó statement, that Hungary may change its position towards sanctions against Russia, if EU interferes with energy partnership of Hungary and Russia. That is what Russia has expected since 2014 – to ruin the European unity towards sanctions against Russia, to settle up the cancellation of sanctions with the countries individually. Hungary may become Trojan horse for Europe.

Hungarian government is deeply interested in 12 billion credit to construct 2 power units of “Paks” nuclear power plant, thus the construction is provided by “Rosatom”. The construction of new power units is going to make Hungary more dependent on Russian nuclear fuel and other components.

As a matter of fact Hungary is trying to keep a foot in both camps – to continue partnership with Russia and to use European cheap credits and subventions, provided on the basis of the Hungary’s membership in the EU.
