WAHA- Treating obstretric fistula in Somaliland.

Thoughout 9 months in 2010 and 2011, WAHA International provided 168 women from Mogadishu, Kismayo and around Somaliland with obstetric fistula surgery. Transport was arranged for women in Southern Somalia to come to Somaliland for surgery by bus and airplane. WAHA worked with a network of health personnel in south and central Somalia, and in partnership with Edna Adan Hospital and Boroma Fistula hospital in Somaliland and used SMS campaigns to help find the patients, transport them and provide them with medical care.

This region has one of the worst maternal health figures in the world. 1 out of every 14 women die in childbirth. Many others survive but with debilitating injuries such as obstetric fistula. Access to emergency obstetric care is extremely difficult, as is access to fistula care.
